Answer Is ATD using .gif graphics legally?
Reading and/or writing of GIF images requires a license to use the Unisys patented Lempel Ziv Welch (LZW) data compression and decompression technology (including United States Patent No. 4,558,302, Japanese Patent Numbers 2,123,602 and 2,610,084, and patents in Canada, France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom).

Jasc Software, Inc., has obtained a license under the above Unisys LZW patents. We have purchased a registered copy of Jasc's popular Paint Shop Pro graphics program, and have used it to generate all the GIF images on this site.

According to Mark Starr, General Patent and Technology Counsel for Unisys, since the GIFs on ATD's site were created with software that is licensed by Unisys (a registered copy of Jasc's Paint Shop Pro), then the use is legal.

This is not a blanket approval, though, for all uses: If you operate a Web server, Internet server or bulletin board, or if you are an on-line vendor using the software as a means to run your online service, you need to further look into the Unisys/.gif license agreement situation.

Answer Does ATD collect personal information?
Not in the traditional sense. We ask that you use - at minimum - your real first name when posting messages to out public discussion board. Leaving your email address is optional.

As we provide public forums for our users, please remember that any information that you disclose in this area becomes public information.

Answer What does ATD do with my personal information?
We do not publish, sell, trade, or rent your personal information to others. Period! One of our "hit counters" does try to determine what browser you are using, and those aggregate statistics may be published (e.g., "35% of the last 50,000 visitors are using Safari..."), but no individual user information will ever be disclosed.

Answer What happens when I make a purchase through a merchant listed on ATD?
ATD transmits absolutely no information about you to anyone else. We do not own the merchants we promote. All transactions and use of any customer information are the sole responsibility of the merchant. For further information regarding the merchant's use of customer information, contact that merchant directly.

Answer Does ATD have security measures in place?
YES. We have security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse, and alteration of the information under our control.

Answer What are cookies?
In the simplest of terms, "cookies" are small pieces of information that are stored by your browser on your computer's hard drive. For more information please visit http://www.cookiecentral.com/.

Answer Does ATD use cookies?
As of 11/2008, we are trying out a "live chat" feature. It is a Java applet on your end. It does collect information about your connection and the browser you use. If you find this objectionable, please email me and let me know.

Also, one of our "hit counters" uses a cookie. It does not contain personally identifying information.

While most Web browsers automatically accept cookies, you can usually change your browser to prevent that. Even without accepting cookies, you can still access all the features on our site.

Answer Does ATD collect information "IP Addresses"?
The "live chat" feature mentioned above and one of our "hit counters" collects IP addresses for the purposes of system administration and to report aggregate information in our research reports.

Answer When participating in message forums, how can I change my email address or request to be removed?
If you wish to change the email address you originally provided, please send us email with the subject line of "Status Change." In the body of the message, please let us know if this is a change of address or removal request - and be certain to include the original email address you provided.

Answer What information is collected from merchants and how is it used?
ATD maintains primary contact persons' names and contact information for all merchants it promotes. We are not responsible for how they collect information from you. None of the personal information you enter on ATD is forwarded to any merchant.

Answer What else should I know about my privacy?
The merchants, third party Internet sites, and third party services accessible through ATD have separate privacy and data collection practices, completely independent of us. We have no responsibility or liability for these independent policies or actions. Why are we telling you this again? Because you should know that everyone's policies may not be as protective of your rights as ATD's are.
